Texture
Texture is the element that adds surface quality and tactile appeal to design, even when working in a purely visual medium. It refers to how something feels—or looks like it would feel—and can range from smooth and polished to rough and gritty. Texture adds depth, dimension, and richness to both digital and print compositions, transforming flat images into engaging visual experiences.
In digital design, texture is often suggested rather than physically present. Designers use subtle gradients, shadows, and patterns to create the illusion of texture on screens. A soft, fabric-inspired background might evoke warmth and comfort, while a crisp, metallic effect can suggest modernity and precision. Texture can also be created through photography, illustration, or even digital brushes, adding a layer of realism to icons, interfaces, and other visual elements.
Print design offers a broader palette for exploring texture, with physical materials playing a central role. Choices like uncoated paper, embossing, letterpress, and foil stamping introduce tangible textures that invite touch and interaction.
